The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) advises that carpets need to be completely dry within 48 hours of extraction to prevent mold and mildew from developing. However, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) rating system states that 48 hours is too long and suggests that carpets need to be dry less than 24 hours after cleaning.
