Preventing MRSA In Athletic Facilities

When it comes to environments that are hospitable to bacteria, fungi and viruses, few venues are as welcoming as athletic locker, training and equipment rooms. Just ask Ted Karras, who as the former head football coach at Marian University in Indianapolis, found he was not only battling opponents on the gridiron but in the team’s athletic facilities.

Following the 2010 season, the Marian Knights were tackled by a most formidable foe – recurring MRSA and staph outbreaks.

“I expect we had more than 20 cases of MRSA and staph following the 2010 season,” said Karras.

The recurring illnesses caused team members to miss games and even resulted in a few hospitalizations. With 150 football players and 300 student athletes using the Marian University weight room, Coach Karras knew that traditional approaches to disinfecting the facilities were not sufficient.

Conventional alcohol, bleach and ammonia-based cleaners will disinfect a surface. However, their protection lasts no more than a few minutes and treated surfaces are quickly recontaminated with the next cough, sneeze or touch.
