Currently, New York, Illinois, Maryland, Connecticut and Hawaii all require green cleaning in schools. Missouri and Maine recommend green cleaning. About a dozen other states are looking into passing their own legislation.
The green cleaning movement is rapidly picking up steam and quickly becoming the law. It’s only a matter of time before all school systems across the country must implement green cleaning.
Building service contractors can use this changing marketplace to their advantage. A number of BSCs already practice green cleaning in commercial facilities and a similar program using the same green products can be used to clean educational facilities.
With more K-12 schools looking to outsource their cleaning programs to reduce spending, providing green cleaning is one way to get ahead of the competition. It also looks favorably on the school board: instead of being viewed as hiring a contractor to save money, the switch to outsourcing would be to provide a green, and thereby healthy, learning environment for the students.
