While cleaning surfaces is the most prominent method of preventing cross-contamination, there are some facilities in which particles need to be contained to certain areas or rooms. More stringent cleaning practices are required in cleanrooms, hospitals and other healthcare facilities, schools, laboratories, pharmaceutical facilities, certain factories and food packaging facilities.

Vacuums certified with HEPA – or high efficiency particulate absorbing — filtration traps fine particles such as pollen and dust, filtering particles as small as 0.3 microns to 99.97 efficiency. HEPA filtration improves indoor air quality, which is beneficial particularly for occupants that suffer from allergies or asthma. The filtration is also a necessity in environments in which building occupants, employees or the general public could be negatively impacted if exposed to dangerous particulates, mold spores, bacteria or illnesses.

Ultra Low Particulate Air, or ULPA, filters, offer even higher efficiency by removing at least 99.999 percent of airborne particles between 0.1 and 0.2 microns.
