For regular vacuuming, some type of upright or canister or backpack vacuum is used universally by all types of facilities. But as contract cleaning frequencies have been cut back due to the recession, the need for interim spot cleaning has increased. Hand-held vacuums, which are most popular in residential settings, can fill in that gap.

Smaller, less powerful machines are typically battery-operated because they don’t require long periods of use. Some are not cordless, however, and they come with a variety of attachable tools such as extension wands and nozzles, depending on the machine.

They fit easily in janitor closets and on housekeeping carts, and can be transported quickly to a spill or problem area.
