To maintain the look and functionality of carpeting, a proper cleaning and maintenance program can be just as important as specifying carpet color, pattern, density and fiber. If cared for properly, carpets can last up to a decade, compared to only two to three years if ignored.

To support this claim, the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) has reviewed a number of studies that compare initial cost, plus installation and maintenance of various flooring options in schools where all flooring types receive heavy and constant traffic. The CRI found that although the initial purchase and installation costs are more expensive for carpet compared hard floors, carpet expenditures prove to be more cost-effective over the full life of the product. The most current Floor Covering Installation Cost Comparison is based on 22 years of service, comparing carpet and VCT per square foot.
