Industrial hand soaps are designed to attack light- to heavy-duty grease and oils that are used by workers in factories and auto or bicycle body shops. Not only do they contain solvents and degreasers, but many contain scrubbing particles, emollients and conditioners as well.

Harsh solvents have largely gone by the wayside, thanks to the green movement, paving the way for powerful biobased ingredients such as d-limonene, soy and citrus.

The most heavy-duty cleaners typically contain pumice particles — and some that are biobased contain walnut shells — that help break up tough grease and dirt. Moisturizers are often included to ensure hands do not become too dry.
