The LEED for Existing Buildings Operation and Maintenance certification requires green cleaning and offers cleaning professionals the opportunity to contribute further by earning up to six points for in-depth green cleaning procedures.
But LEED-EBOM is not the only way that building service contractors and in-house cleaning professionals can participate in the certification program.
LEED for New Construction primarily focuses on construction materials. Only one cleaning-related point is outlined in the guidelines: installing 10 feet of entrance matting and properly ventilating janitor closets.
In addition to this one point, LEED-NC allows for "innovation credits" to be earned for implementing anything related to green but not covered in the certification guidelines. A green cleaning program that meets LEED-EBOM criteria is a low-cost solution that can earn one of these credits and score a second point towards certification.
