Effective, focused training does not cost in the long run since it will pay back in efficiencies, fewer accidents, reduced re-do’s, employee retention and opportunities for new business.  In the following articles, we will address training tips with this first focus on the trainer.  Following are questions/suggestions for the new or experienced trainer to consider:

1. Am I prepared?  That does not mean that you have to have a perfect presentation; rather it means that you have an end result in mind:  a trained worker who can safely and effectively perform the task(s) you have covered in the session(s).

2. Am I qualified?  This does not mean you have a PhD in custodial; rather it means that you should have sufficient hands on experience to give you a sense of authority when training a group or an individual.

3. Am I organized?  This simply means that you know what topics you are covering in a schedule that allows you to have an end date.

4. Do I have the right tools?  This could include Power Point presentations (if you have that skill set or assistance) but it probably means that you have a manual, videos, visual aids, sample tools, equipment and supplies as well as knowledge of how to use each item.

5. Where am I going to train?  Is it going to be in a designated training room, onsite and on the job (OJT), rotating areas or???? It is important you have some control over the training area to reduce distractions and enhance the training environment.

6. Who is my audience?  This may be one or several individuals.  Are they experienced or brand new to this training?  What is their literacy level?

We will continue with Training Tips in the next articles.

Your comments and questions are always welcome. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean…
