Many companies proclaim that they prefer to hire from within; however the reality is they do very little to prepare workers for future advancement. A great floor person or frontline custodian may have aspirations of becoming a supervisor or trainer one day. They will be relying on their immediate supervisor to guide them in how to prepare. On the job training, informal discussions and opportunities to lead can go a long ways in identifying workers who could become Leads, Supervisors, Quality Control Inspectors or Trainers.
Consider your day to day interactions and casually ask the worker what their goals in life encompass. Ask them if they are interested in a future with your company? Ask them if they are willing to learn on their own effort to prepare for the next Lead or Supervisory position? Of course, they may want to know what is the pay, benefits and other perks for taking on additional responsibilities. They may want to know what the company’s goals are in relation to them. They may want to know how long will it take and how far up the ladder can they go.
These are all legitimate questions that a savvy Supervisor can use to attract and hold quality talent that may go elsewhere if they are not aware of the opportunities within the company. You will find in most cases that the more engaged a worker is the better the work, the more reliable they become and the longer they will tend to stay.
Your current staff can be a great source for future management if approached and cultivated in the right manner.
Your comments and questions are always welcome. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean…
