Safety Best Practices

Periodically I like to simply review things we already know but tend to put off or forget. Following is a continuation of suggestions from a prior article: • Always follow manufacturer’s directions with the safe, correct use of chemicals. This means reading the MSDS (SDS) as well as the label and any accompanying literature. • Wear appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) to protect eyes and skin even if the risk seems minimal. • Remember that prolonged exposure to a product can have an accumulative effect on health that is so gradual that it may go unnoticed until too late. • Do Not Mix products unless you are absolutely sure that it is safe to do so. Although water is the universal solvent, it can actually cause certain chemicals to become volatile and dangerous. • Work in well ventilated areas away from battery chargers, gas pilot lights and other potential sources of ignition. • Never, never, never dump solutions down storm drains. Always use a sanitary system and even then, be sure that you are not contaminating the clean water system. • Use a dry vac system for powder spills and avoid applying any chemicals which may activate the dyes in the product resulting in a far bigger mess to clean up. • Use HWE (hot water extraction) judiciously since if used incorrectly, can damage carpet, create mold/mildew issues and add to poor IAQ (indoor air quality). • Be sure all workers allowed to use acid type cleaners have been properly trained in their safe use. • Be aware of any ventilation issues which may require propping open a door or running fans. • Spend a few moments reviewing the MSDS (or SDS in 2014) information so that you are aware of the potential risks and exposure to yourself, your staff and of course, your customer and their clients.
