Worker safety is important for many reasons. Proper use of PPE’s (personal protective equipment) is a key element in safe operations. Too often workers are observed handling debris, body fluids or chemicals without proper protection for their eyes and hands. In some cases, a respirator, chemical resistant apron or other garment may be necessary in extreme situations. Another item to consider is slip resistant safety shoes that fit well and support the worker in the tasks they perform. Safety glasses (with side guards) and full-face splash goggles may be necessary for those working around chemicals that could be spattered either during the cleaning process or by accident.

Workers should be trained in Emergency Procedures including first aid in many cases. Time is a critical factor in saving a life or reducing the chance of further injury to a victim. How does one respond to a slip/fall? What is the first step? What about a chemical spill of an unknown product? Do workers understand the proper steps for containment? One key training point is to always contact the onsite supervisor while being proactive in dealing with the situation at hand.

Remember that the employer has the responsibility of providing all necessary PPE’s to their workers at no additional cost to them. All workers should be periodically trained in their safe use.
