I often start a class by inviting attendees to introduce themselves and ask a question or volunteer information relevant to the subject being covered. Many of my attendees are Lead Workers, Supervisors and Project Managers who are eager to learn and grow. When the introductions are over, I thank them for what they do each day and stress the important role they play in the successful operations of a custodial contract. I often go on to state that they are the ones on the front line who generate the income for the Building Service Contractor, and contrary to popular opinion, I contend they are the most important members of the team.
Without a well-trained, well-supported and motivated onsite supervisor the contract will fail or not reach its full potential as to profitability and effectiveness. The front line supervisor has to wear many hats each day and is responsible for outcomes crucial to providing a healthy environment in a consistent manner. They too often do not get the support or recognition they deserve for what they do.
I point out to attendees that they are probably not the ones with the Amex credit card and that they do not get to attend the national trade shows since many times they do not have anyone to take their place even for a few days. I encourage them to subscribe to the trade magazines, read news feeds like this one and continue to educate themselves in the ever changing world of cleaning.
Most of us do what we do out a sense of pride and go beyond expectations. I hope that one day the front line supervisor will be recognized for the real value they bring to the table. Your comments and questions are always welcome. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean…
