Inspect Marble Floors After Cleaning

A reader asks: “I read one of your articles on marble and have a question as how best to clean it up once all the construction is over.”

We have gone through the basic steps of scrubbing/rinsing/picking up the floor and have tested for any residue which should be removed. We have stressed the importance of cleaning mopping solution, neutral detergent (NO ACIDS), frequent mop head changes and care in avoiding scratches. Now that floor is clean, inspect in day light (if there are windows) or bright lights to identify any areas that may be scratched and showing signs of premature wear. 

Following my 80.20 Rule you will probably find the front entrance(s) or areas coming from a loading dock to have the most wear and scratches. You will also find back areas and along the walls to usually be the cleanest and shiniest since these areas has the least amount of traffic and soiling. Of course, the hope is that upon inspection the customer approves the floor, pays you and you are on your way to the next job. If he/she is dissatisfied you should be prepared with a Plan B that includes possibly implementing a diamond pad system that can bring the entire floor up to a standard. 

Although I cannot recommend a specific company, if you use a good search engine (this company has a great one) to identify the various products and watch a video on how best to safely use the process on marble surfaces, you should be able to satisfy their concerns. This should be an extra charge since your efforts should not have contributed to the scratches; rather exposed the damage that had already been done.

Under no circumstances should you apply “wax” or floor finish to marble floors as it does not allow the product to breathe correctly. Make sure you know what you are doing and good luck with this project.
