Periodically I like to get back to the basics of cleaning since we all need reminders along the way of the steps necessary to clean a facility effectively and safely. Remember:
1. Never use unlabeled chemicals even though you may know what the product is due to color or odor. OSHA guidelines are very specific in requiring properly labeled chemicals in spray bottles, buddy jugs and other containers.
2. In most cases, spray the product on the appropriate cloth or wipe rather than directly on the surface. Be careful regarding how a chemical vaporizes and can easily be inhaled. Although an occasional inhalation may not be dangerous, continued exposure over time can accumulate and may have damaging effect.
3. Learn how to pull liners and reline trash cans while limiting risk of sharps that may be in the bag. Never push down trash with your hands and even use caution in using a tamping tool.
4. Learn how to lay a trash barrel on its side and as air escapes, pull gently so that there is less strain on the back and arms.
5. Always place full trash bags on a piece of card board or plastic to reduce chances of leakage. When possible, use the barrel or collection container to transport the large bags to the dumpster or disposal site. Know when to ask for help with lifting or simply reduce the contents of a heavy bag.
6. Know where the SDS information is located and be alert as to how to assist with injuries.
Please note there are just suggestions that you will need to adapt to your particular situation and region. Laws and guidance may vary. Go to www.osha.gov for specific guidance.
Your comments and questions are important. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean...
