This article is a continuation of the steps to take in order to start a cleaning business.

  • Do you have some start up accounts already? If so, how did you get them and can you find more business like this?

  • Of course, how are they priced and are they profitable when you take into account your overhead, allocated expenses and of course, profit margins?

  • Do you know how to conduct a bid walk, survey an opportunity, generate a professional proposal and close the deal if it is being competed?

  • Do you have a line of credit or available cash to sustain your business until customers actually pay? This is even more important if you have employees who expect to be paid whether your customers have paid or not.

  • Have you determined your "niche" within the industry? If you can become recognized as a professional SME (subject matter expert) in a given field you can focus your time, talent and resources on one or two profitable areas. For example, I recently met an individual who refers all requests for basic custodial services to associates (for a nice fee) and focuses his time on customized carpets and rugs that pay handsomely. No two are alike and he is the only service in a very high income area that loves the personalized service.

  • You may focus on carpet, hard floor, pressure washing, stone polishing, sanitizing rest rooms or a plethora of other opportunities that will separate you from the crowd. Your comments and questions are important. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean...
