A reader asked: “I appreciate your comments about hiring a trainer but how do we evaluate the results to determine if we want to have them continue or get someone else?”
One definition of effective training is that which brings about a change in attitude and action. In order to evaluate the results you need objective metrics before the trainer has had contact with your staff. A few metrics to consider are SF/hour productivity, valid complaints and Quality Control scores. You first need to decide what you want the trainer to accomplish. These goals should be achievable within the time frame and other limitations including budget, access and other factors. Remember that you probably will not turn your staff into PhD’s over a two or three day workshop. It might be advisable to develop a master plan that is broken out between front line workers, supervision/quality control and upper management.
The theme or topic can range from green cleaning to rest room servicing to spotting carpet to scheduling and workloading to bidding/estimating to ?????? Once you have determined what you want the trainer to focus on, make sure that he/she clearly understands time constraints, attendee background and if possible, desired results stated in one or two sentences.
My suggestion is that you start with your front line workers, project managers and other key staff who can be a catalyst in implementing custodial best practices. You might consider utilizing the trainer as a facilitator to determine the XYZ Cleaning Company’s way of cleaning. By investing those efforts up front you can maximize the benefits of the trainer and eventually have in-house staff who can continue the program to the next level. You might consult with the trainer regarding his/her advice on any certifications for staff or for your company that could help you market yourself to targeted prospects.
Your comments and questions are important. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean...
