A reader writes: "I am having a lot of problems since I converted to microfiber cloths and mop heads. They do not seem to pick up nearly as much moisture as claimed and most workers prefer using either terry cloth cotton or paper wipes. Any suggestions?"
As I often quote “It is all about the process." Based on a quick review of how you are using and laundering your microfiber cloths and mop heads I can agree that they are not working as promised. You cannot treat microfiber the same way you would cotton or other fibers simply because they can easily be damaged by improper care. Following are some points to consider:
1. You do not have enough cloths or mop heads to allow your cleaning staff to rotate soiled fibers. You stated that there is a lot of pilferage and loss which is really a supervision issue. One company gave all staff a specially colored microfiber cloth that they could take home and were warned that any loss of the assigned cloths could result in disciplinary action. Overloaded cloths and mop heads are simply moving soil from one area to another and is resulting in unacceptable cleaning results.
2. You are allowing the laundry service to mix the microfiber cloths and mop heads with cotton and other fabrics which allows the lint to block/clog the microfiber strands thereby rendering them ineffective. Only wash microfiber with the same and do not mix for more effective cleaning.
3. You are allowing the laundry service to use bleach which can damage microfiber even though their goal is to kill microorganisms and disinfect the overly soiled cloths. Only use a laundry detergent that contains no bleach. Research the possibility of using either a peroxide product or an oxy product to help remove the stains acquired from overuse.
We will continue these thoughts in a future article.
