Are you ready to move from front-line janitor to onsite supervisor? Following is a brief, partial list to consider as to the Role of a Supervisor.

• Understand requirements of contract
• Responsible for day-to-day productivity
• Manages day to day operations by fulfilling various functions/duties
• Functions as public relations contact with customer and tenants
• Has firsthand experience in most custodial operations from cleaning rest rooms to floor care to office cleaning
• Responsible for staffing and workloading
• Responsible for dealing with absenteeism and unscheduled events including emergencies
• Functions as coach and trainer for all workers under his/her direction
• Responsible for managing budgeted hours and tasks versus actual
• Responsible for the building/area being serviced daily as per contract
• Has the ability to determine quality outcomes (Sat and Unsat) for any given task that is to be performed
• Responsible for understanding and implementing local, state, federal and other regulatory requirements related to green cleaning, safety, OSHA, EPA, workers compensation, liability, etc.
• Responsible for many human resource functions in dealing with laws regarding harassment, discrimination and other related issues
• Can you think of any others? ______________________________________________

To function as a supervisor requires many skill sets that can be learned and improved with study and a willingness to grow. When we think of managing productivity, we bring virtually all of the functions and responsibilities listed above together.

Without a clear understanding of the importance of managing productivity, the contract will likely fail. Productivity primarily has to do with managing the bottom line and staying within the contract parameters as to labor, equipment, supplies and other costs. Your role as a supervisor can make or break a contract.

Your comments and questions are important. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean...
