A reader recently wrote in stating that they had just opened a new cleaning business. Obviously, this comes with many questions. First, they were looking for tips on how to attract customers. This person was also ready to do a walk-through with a client, but wasn’t sure what to cover during the meeting.
Well, I’ll do my best to address these questions.
First things first, welcome to the industry. You will see that being part of this industry will pay back in so many ways based on the investment in time and effort you are willing to invest. I really appreciate your enthusiasm and “can do spirit” since it will require a consistent emphasis and focus to success in this or any business today.
Regarding your questions, I have several articles published in this CleanLink Minute series on starting up a cleaning business that may be of benefit if you search them out. The publications available on this site3, and others in the industry, have some excellent articles, manuals and book stores that cover business start up very well. Just understanding the legal and regulatory requirements can be daunting.
I once consulted with a couple who wanted me to teach them “everything” about the cleaning business but were always too busy to learn since they preferred to attend a ball game or social event rather than buckle down and learn how to strip/recoat a floor or manage their books. Needless to say, they were easily distracted and I am not sure if they made it or not.
I highly encourage you to realize that you will improve over time if you keep trying to learn. Keep notes of your experiences as to what does and does not work. Develop peer groups with others that are not located in your trade area so there is not concerns about competition. Look for mentors within the industry that can show you the ropes. Attend the trade shows, get your certifications and focus on what you are good at rather than trying to do everything.
Your comments and questions are important. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean...
