I recently received a call from a reader saying, “We are encountering major plumbing problems in our buildings. It seems there is a high traffic count due to people flushing adult and child diapers down the toilet. Any suggestions would be appreciated.”

As our population ages, this will probably be a growing challenge to educate the public on proper disposal. We have always had the challenge of baby diapers, which present many of the same issues: primarily odor and correct disposal.

First of all, we are not doing a good enough job of educating the public via posters and vendor inserts. Many of the adult diaper manufacturers provide disposable, sealable bags for this purpose but I suggest that the building provide additional bags alongside the diaper changing tables as a convenience. In checking the web, I found many companies that provide such bags.

Another important step is to identify and install separate containers disposal. These containers should be easy to use and when possible in all or at least any handicap stalls. I suggest either they have a foot pedal (or better still a motion sensor) to open the lid. There are some units with a top flap that may not seal out the odors as well as a sealed lid.

Another important point to consider is targeted policing all day in key rest rooms that have been identified as high use for these purposes. Inspecting and pulling the lined containers is important for odor control. Finally, discuss your concerns with your vendor/distributor who may have some other ideas with a focus on low costs for this service so shop around before you make a final decision.
