Batteries are just one of the power sources available with carpet care equipment, but it is becoming more popular. Many cleaning crews like this power option because it eliminates trip and fall hazards associated with cords, but with the convenience and freedom batteries provide come the responsibility of properly storing and cleaning to maximize the capability of the machine.
First and foremost, no matter what type of battery is being used with the equipment, it is important to follow proper safety, handling and storage requirements set forth by the manufacturer. When cleaning the battery for storage, workers should wear proper personal protective equipment such as rubber gloves, safety goggles and a rubber apron. Follow guidelines for appropriate chemical usage and procedures when cleaning these batteries.
Once clean, it is important to charge the battery and then store it properly in a cool, dry place. If cleaners are storing the batteries for extended periods of time, recharge the battery every three to four months to maintain proper performance.
Battery maintenance differs by make and model of the battery. For workers unsure of the proper technique to follow, contact the battery manufacturer or jan/san distributor.
