Cross-contamination is a concern wherever there are touchpoints and potentially harmful bacteria. But in settings such as gyms, locker rooms and fitness centers, it’s not just hands that come into contact with equipment — it’s larger areas of skin. Illnesses that are communicable through the skin include MRSA and HIV. Whether in regards to gymnastics or wrestling, free weights benches or exercise machines, and locker room showers or benches, it’s crucial for surfaces that may touch skin to be cleaned and disinfected frequently.

In addition to regular cleaning and disinfecting, many facilities are providing the education and products so that occupants can contribute to reducing cross-contamination. Cleansing wipes and sprays, with instructions on proper use, are available in many fitness settings so that users can clean up before and after they have used equipment. Hand sanitizer should also be provided.
