Periodically I like to get back to the basics of cleaning since we all need reminders along the way of the steps necessary to clean a facility effectively and safely. Remember:
1. Always identify correct PPE's (personal protective equipment) for the job at hand. Make sure that gloves, goggles, foot wear, etc. are appropriate for the job being performed. Note that the "sandwich" making gloves are not legal for any custodial work that I know of and do not really protect workers from chemicals and pathogens.
2. Always use correct safety signage to warn people of wet floors or other hazards. There are different types available in various colors with even multiple languages to protect people from potential slip/falls. If possible, use warning tapes or barriers to prevent pedestrians from walking on floors being stripped or recoated.
3. Wash hands thoroughly before and after using gloves, especially when cleaning rest rooms or food areas. Wash the gloved hands between operations to reduce possibility of cross contamination. Be alert to cuts on your hands or skin that can be infected by not only liquids but also some air borne diseases. Don't be an unintentional carrier of pathogens.
4. Remember that plain ordinary detergents/soaps with plenty of water are effective in most cases along with clean, disposable wipes or freshly laundered cloths.
5. Never mix chemicals that may have different pH and properties. Although water is the universal solvent for water based chemicals, make sure that you learn the difference in pouring water into a chemical as opposed to pouring the chemical into water. Beware splashing and use caution in inhaling any off gassing that may occur.
Please note there are just suggestions that you will need to adapt to your particular situation and region. Laws and guidance may vary. Go to www.osha.gov for specific guidance.
Your comments and questions are important. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean...
