A reader writes: “I just moved into a new area of the country and want to continue to subcontract cleaning grocery stores. Is there a database of what companies do this business in my area?”

If there is such a database you probably can find it on one or more search engines available to you. I doubt if there is one that will do you much good for the specificity you want.

My suggestion is to create your own proprietary database for your local marketing area. Develop a list of all the grocery stores (chains and independents) in a five, 10 or 50 mile radius. Once you have chains listed you only need to check out one or two to determine the local manager makes the decision to use in-house staff, hire a service, or defer to corporate office for the choice.

Once you know the a chain uses the same contractor (company X) to provide service, you then should research and contact that company to see if they use their own staff or subcontract the work to local vendors such as yourself. Of course, while conducting your research you may come across a grocery store that will consider you as the contractor subject to your having insurance, licenses, etc.

If you still prefer to subcontract make sure that there is a clear agreement in place answering who, what, when, where since handshakes on this type service can be hazardous to your financial health. For instance, what are your credentials? Who provides the equipment and what type is needed? What about chemicals and other supplies? What kind of background checks are required? What is the performance level? Are there financial penalties for failing to meet standards? And of course, what is the billing process?

Good luck in your new area.

Your comments and questions are important. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean...
