A reader asks: “Can you give me a price range for cleaning window blinds?”

I am uncomfortable with even giving you a range on these topics since there are a lot of variables that can affect the price including who is doing the work? I stress the need to clarify “cleaning” since the desired results will determine the true costs for this type work. Also, the current condition of the blinds will have an impact on final costs.

Window blind cleaning should be time and materials with a caveat that the age/condition of blinds may dictate replacement since cords can go fast in certain conditions.

• There are machines that can actually clean the units with sonic waves but can still damage cords if work is performed by an inexperienced staff member.

• Costs for increased labor will also be impacted by whether they are taken down or left hanging.

• It may be best to simply vacuum/dust the blinds hanging and spot any obvious soils but not try to thoroughly wash them.

Please clearly define “clean” versus “wash” for obvious reasons. There should be clear verbiage protecting the cleaning service from liability for blinds that have age and extended use on them. Beware of a customer who demands you “clean” the blinds but will not release you from reasonable liability. In such a situation, I suggest you walk away.

Blind cleaning/servicing can be a lucrative service so long as you understand the risks and know how to do the work correctly and safely. It would be wise to bring in a service to an experienced subcontractor the first few times and then branch out on your own over time.

Your comments and questions are important. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean…
