I respect the challenges that a school custodian has today and recognize that in today’s competitive environment, fears of contagion and budget cuts, the front line custodian at a school is probably not appreciated as much as he/she should be. My response to the specifications and outcomes that are developed is that a “little ignorance goes a long ways” since it sets everyone up for failure. Unrealistic standards that are not adequately covered in the budget will result in frustration for everyone involved. The school will complain that the janitorial staff is not fulfilling the standards while failing to acknowledge that there are not enough hours and staffing to covering all of these expectations.
The custodial staff is badgered and reprimanded for failing to meet the standards which can result in them looking for another job that is more reasonable. When any contract loses an experienced staff member they lose productivity as well as a motivated worker who may be harder to replace than they first thought. Of course, morale is important and the janitorial staff need to understand that many of the concerns (although misguided) are legitimate. They need to recognize that they are the front line of defense against not only contagion but also slip/falls. They are the ones who can provide a clean, attractive environment conducive to learning.
I just wish the Board, teachers and parents valued them the same way.
Your comments and questions are important. I hope to hear from you soon. Until then, keep it clean...
