John Poole, is a Master REH, RBSM, I.C.E., CIMS Assessor and Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer. John writes for various trade publications, speaks and consults on custodial operations with an emphasis in safety and OSHA compliance. He has 30-plus years in the industry and has managed both small and large accounts with a sterling reputation for quality customer service while staying within budget.

In a recent interview he shared the following thoughts on the theme of Lessons Learned:

• Be nice to your crew.  They know you are the Boss and if you give respect, you will get respect.  

• Leave “attitude” out of the workplace.

• Be civil towards all employees simply because it is the right thing to do.

• Be consistent and fair in all disciplinary actions towards employees while documenting all steps taken.

• Be visible to your crew and customers alike.  Be available and practice the principle of “managing by walking around” which means you get out of the office.

• Take prompt action with any problems your crew encounters and make sure they know you are looking for their wellbeing.

• Document, document, document with special emphasis on payroll records since your staff are dependent on that check for necessities and you are the one to make sure they are paid on time.

• Continue to be a student of your profession all your life by staying involved in the industry, reading, participating, asking questions and maintaining your credentials and certifications.  

• Be a professional in all that you do and look for opportunities to grow and give back to the industry.
