In men's restrooms, urine has a habit of finding its way to the floor, resulting in problematic odors. Cleaning crews can place anti-microbial, plastic urinal mats under and around the urinal. These mats have an absorbent pad underneath to collect drips of urine and water. The backing contains enzymes that attack uric salts before they cause an odor problem. Mats also may contain fragrances.

Urinal mats are designed to be thrown away after 30 days of use, but cleaning staffs should keep in mind that mats may need to be discarded earlier than that. In high-traffic restrooms, mats may become oversaturated quickly rendering them ineffective.
