This award honors the building service contracting employee whose job performance, work ethic, civic involvement and family role best exemplify qualities found in superior janitorial employees. This year’s winner is Marlo Woolcott from ESS Clean Inc., Urbana, Illinois.
Woolcott started at ESS Clean nine years ago. From day one, he has embraced his job and begun identifying ways to improve the company’s warehouse operations. He continually challenges himself to stay current with new products.
“Thank you BSCAI for choosing me for this award. I especially want to thank my ESS Clean Inc. family for their confidence and appreciation of my work,” says Woolcott. “I have certainly not done it alone, as it takes a whole team to accomplish what we do and how we do it. I am proud to be a team player and member of such a great company doing a terrific job in a very competitive market.”
His role may be behind the scenes, but it’s essential to the success of the multiple-branch building service contractor. Every day, Woolcott ensures the warehouse is organized and product is available. In addition, he assists with ordering, receiving and inventory management. He also handles equipment repairs, cleans the offices at the main branch and does the laundry.
“When times get a little crazy, Marlo is the voice of reason,” says CEO Paul Taylor. “His composure combined with experience keep us on track here at ESS Clean when life is crazy. His dry sense of humor keeps us on our toes and lifts our spirits when we are down. His precision and order help make our unpredictable business simple.”
One of the company’s recent goals was to clean up the inventory process, making processes more efficient and counts more accurate. With Woolcott’s help, overhead and loss in the warehouse decreased from 11.5 percent at the beginning of 2017 to 5.1 percent.
“Marlo is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done,” says Peggy Tobin, accounting and inventory specialist. “He runs a tight ship in his warehouse, knows the products and what will work and what won’t. He has been an intricate part of the process changes and improvements this past year.”
Arthur C. Barraclough Community Service Award
Named for the former president-elect who sadly passed away before taking office, this award recognizes volunteer efforts and generous acts for charities and the community. This year’s winner is 4M Building Solutions, St. Louis.
4M CEO and President Tim Murch makes sure that charitable giving is a company priority. He leads by example as the chairman of The Buddy Fund Organization. This organization works to improve the character and life-skills of at-risk disadvantaged youth by delivering sports equipment for structured recreational activities in the metro St. Louis region. More than 15,000 kids are helped yearly.
Inspired by company leadership, 4M staff members are happy to come together to support those in need. For example, the local St. Louis management team walked together in the Make-a-Wish Foundation’s Annual Walk For Wishes and as a company raised $4,000 in donations and sponsorships.
In addition, the corporate team donated calculators to Lift for Life Academy, a local charter school geared toward low-income families.
4M’s service reaches far beyond St. Louis and so does its charitable contributions. The San Antonio team participates in the Valero Texas Open for charity.
“At 4M Building Solutions one of our core values has always been that of giving back and making a difference, and we hope our communities know how much we appreciate being a part of each and every one of them,” says Murch. “We want to want to keep reaching out and building them up. Whether it be a building, a park, a committee or an organization, we want to leave each place 4M touches cleaner and better off than when we began.”
