Among the most prestigious of awards presented annually by Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI), the James E. Purcell Leadership award is given in recognition of long-term service to both the association and the building service contracting industry. This year’s winner is Nathalie Doobin, owner and CEO of Harvard Services Group, Miami.
After attending her first BSCAI conference in 2011, Doobin has since made a name for herself both in the association and the industry, joining the BSCAI board in 2015 and later becoming president in 2022. Doobin was drawn to the connectivity of the association and the willingness of every member to share best strategies, lessons learned, and thoughts on key industry trends.
“BSCAI provides educational programs and certifications, such as Certified Building Service Executive (CBSE), that make a difference in understanding various client verticals and how to bid them,” says Doobin. “They also have professional speakers featured at each conference which helps educate on leadership, the economy, human resources, best practices and much more. All the relevant vendors attend the conferences; therefore, the networking is worth the price of admission.”
Reflecting further on her journey to eventually becoming president, Doobin credits not only attending conferences, but volunteering to speak, as well. Peer groups and committees are also key avenues to establishing pivotal bonds in the industry.
While thinking back on her favorite memories with BSCAI, Doobin expressed pride in being one of the few female BSCAI presidents in its over 50 years of existence, as well as being an advocate in the building services industry. When it comes to her goals for Harvard, continued involvement in both the industry and the local community Harvard serves is a top priority.
“Harvard’s success has helped fuel my contributions in the community, in business and the arts. As such, I am a proud board member of the Mount Sinai Miami Beach Foundation, of the Florida Council of 100 and of the Pittsburgh-based Andy Warhol Museum,” says Doobin. “My husband and I also contribute to multiple local charities that matter to our employees.”
