In recognition of the 60th anniversary of Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI), each issue will explore a different decade and how events during that time shaped the contract cleaning industry.
The 1990s was a time of celebration for Building Service Contractors Association – International (BSCA), starting with its silver celebration at the first event of the decade. That launched 10 years of unprecedented member participation and some of the largest conventions to date, which also drove the growth of education and certifications.
1990
- During their Annual Convention and Trade Show held in Washington, D.C., BSCA celebrated a successful first 25 years. The theme of the event was, “Celebrating a Silver Moment Entering a Golden Future" and it welcomed back two decades of past presidents and leaders.

1992
- BSCA quietly starts incorporating “International” into their marketing and updates the logo to reflect the update. The association adopts the BSCAI acronym.

1993
- The association changed the presidential term to a calendar year rather than from convention to convention. As a result, Dan McCormick, of National Building Services & Maintenance, was the only nine-month president of the association.
- BSCAI launched Plateaus of Growth for building service companies, a six-step guide for BSCs trying to identify their company’s next step for growth and expansion.
1994
- The Certified Sanitary Supply Professional (CSSP) designation is launched for manufacturers and distributors to encourage integrity and commitment to meeting the needs of BSCs. The closest designation today is the Registered Building Supply Professional (RBSP) certification.
1995
- Lillian Lincoln Lambert, of Centennial One, was recognized and sworn in as the first female president of the association.

- Contracting Profits launches its first issue, immediately becomes a member of BSCAI and begins publishing association news.
