In 1965, my Italian-immigrant grandfather set up shop in Chicago's Printer's Row and fulfilled his American dream of starting his own business. He put in long hours selling his lithographic expertise to area businesses looking to grow their customer base through print advertising. He devoted himself to his client's success by anticipating their needs and harnessing imagination and hard work. 

His business savvy notwithstanding, my grandfather's outstanding customer service and ability to connect with people brought him great success. As business grew, he welcomed his children into the fold, and us grandchildren in kind. 

My family's story, and my personal experiences in a family business, are always top of mind when I interact with legacy building service contractors. It's especially the case with the Harris family, featured in our cover story. I had the honor of meeting Jim Harris, Sr. early in my career and he always reminded me of my grandfather — smart, savvy, hardworking, and very kind.  

Jim Sr. started Janitronics in 1972, and he spent the next 50 years dedicated to the people that made up both his company and this industry. Like my grandfather, he never really stopped working. Even after retirement, I’m told Jim Sr. would come into the office to share wisdom and offer suggestions, but the real reason was to be around the people (especially his son and grandchildren) in the industry he loved.  

It's a joy to see that the same passion and determination Jim Sr. exuded was passed on to the next generations. Again, I can relate. The struggles Jim Jr. shares in our cover story and his perseverance in righting the ship are reminiscent of the roller-coaster I watched my mother ride as she took over the reins. The draw that brought Dan, Brian and Abby Harris into the company fold was one I too experienced at a young age.  

A family going into business together isn’t for the faint of heart. It's hard work and you have to learn early on how to separate business from family life. The good news is, the rewards of watching your loved ones grow, thrive, and succeed are worth all the blood, sweat, and tears. I’m honored to have had the opportunity to get to know the Harris family and share their story with the industry.
