Why read another book on leadership? The shelves of bookstores are lined with books promising to make you a more successful leader. What could Dr. Albert Mohler, a seminary and university president, possibly have to add to the mix? Well, surprisingly, he has much to add to the conversation. In fact, what Dr. Mohler offers nears a complete paradigm shift in leadership wisdom, as alluded to in the book title, “The Conviction to Lead.”

Before reading any book attempting to give you direction on major life issues, the credibility of the author is vital. So what makes Dr. Mohler a credible source for leadership advice? Dr. Mohler, 55, serves as the president of one of the largest seminaries in the world, a post he has held since the remarkably young age of 33. He hosts two radio programs, maintains a widely read blog, has written numerous books, teaches doctorate courses, and has been featured in major news outlets such as The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, “Larry King Live,” “Dateline,” and “Good Morning America.”

As Mohler points out, most books on leadership are nothing more than management techniques — ways to be operationally effective. Additionally, he makes the observation that society is filled with believers and leaders. Believers are people passionate about ideas, knowledge and truth. They are champions of a cause. Leaders, on the other hand, are “masters of motivation, vision, strategy and execution. The problem is, many of them are not sure what they believe or why it matters. … They often ride one program after another until they run out of steam. Then they wonder, ‘What now?’”

Mohler’s aim is to blend believers and leaders. He says: “My goal is to redefine [leadership] so that it is inseparable from passionately held beliefs and to motivate those who are deeply committed to truth to be ready for leadership. … The generation that accomplishes this will set the world on fire.”

In subsequent chapters Dr. Mohler lays out the DNA of a “believing leader.” He tackles topics such as conviction, character, thinking, teaching, reading, writing, communicating and even death and legacy. His book truly prepares men and women for greatness.

Although you may not agree with all of the author’s convictions and views, you will most certainly benefit from his leadership wisdom. Mohler’s book should be read and reread by leaders for years to come.
