Sally Schopmeyer

The Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI) awards the Walter L. Cook Award for Distinguished Service to the BSCAI member who has made outstanding contributions in furthering the programs and image of the association and the building service contracting industry. This year’s recipient is Sally Schopmeyer, president of Maintenance Inc., Dallas.

A 35-year veteran of the commercial cleaning industry, Schopmeyer recognized the value of BSCAI early on and devoted time to nurturing invaluable connections at events and other networking opportunities along the way. Reflecting on the various BSCAI programs she’s been involved with other the years; she expressed reverence for the “cleaning for health” movement, which paved the way for safer equipment and protocols for frontline workers across the industry

Schopmeyer’s passion for helping and mentoring others in the industry calls back to when she was first getting started. The amount of encouragement and opportunities she was given from colleagues in the industry inspired her to pay the same energy forward.

“I never thought I would grow up and become a janitor. I don’t think most people do. However, business is business is business, regardless of what industry you are in,” reflects Schopmeyer. “I was given so many opportunities, and so many people believed in me — even before I believed that I could be successful in the industry. I love inspiring others to achieve goals they never thought possible, both personally and professionally.

Looking ahead, Schopmeyer is excited for the future after recently starting in her role on the WFBSC (World Federation of Building Service Contractors) board of directors in October. It provides an opportunity to collaborate with some of cleaning’s brightest minds.

“To say I am honored and excited is an understatement,” she says. “I hope to contribute in a meaningful way and will learn as much as possible to progress the cleaning industry further.”
