When it comes to the rigorous yet steady demands of commercial cleaning, reliability is a trait every custodial team yearns for in employees. Much to the appreciation of St. Louis-based 4M Building Services, supervisor Shuntina Burton Evans has been counted on time and time again to deliver quality service for one of the contractor’s biggest clients: Milwaukee Art Museum.
As one of the highest-profile facilities in the city with high volumes of foot traffic daily, the museum requires constant cleaning both during and after operational hours. In addition to maintaining a quality appearance, the custodial team must also prioritize safety in the case of obstacles, spills or debris that can lead to slipping hazards around valuable artifacts and art collections.
Despite the many challenging days, Shuntina’s team always comes through under her steady leadership.
“Shuntina holds that place together,” according to her direct supervisor. “She takes responsibility to ensure her team does what they need to throughout the facility. She communicates with the client daily, and they’ve said they absolutely love her.”
The appreciation extends beyond just the client. To ensure that teams are adequately staffed, and her fellow employees have flexibility in times of need, Shuntina never hesitates to swap shifts and be a stabilizing presence during special events held at the museum. Staying late to assist with porters or coming in on days off are regular contributions from her.
Her transparency has also proven pivotal for the facility operation, as she’s never afraid to take accountability when mistakes do occur and will always alert 4M management when assistance or improvements are needed.
“Shuntina is not merely a contract employee for the museum, the client considers her a part of their team,” says Todd Vasel, vice president of Marketing for 4M. “She has exhibited honesty and integrity regularly over the years, alerting the museum when she finds wallets, phones, and other valuables, turning them in so their rightful owner can claim them.”
Considering her strong leadership, work ethic, and genuine care for teammates and clients alike, there’s little question as to why Shuntina was named the 4M Building Solutions Team Member of the Year for 2024.
“Thanks to Shuntina’s leadership, the same cleaning team has been in place at the museum for several years,” says Vasel. “She makes herself approachable to others around her. She compliments those that have earned the recognition of a job well done.”
