Even though I’m exhausted by the end of it all, I do truly look forward to the week of ISSA/INTERCLEAN and BSCAI’s Annual Convention (now called the Contracting Success Conference). I have been attending both of these shows for nearly 15 years and gained a lot of great memories.
These two shows hold a wealth of information. Where else in the span of a few days can you see new products from 700 manufacturers and network with upwards of 3,000 building service contractors? By walking the expansive show floor and talking to exhibitors at ISSA/INTERCLEAN, you can glean insight into product innovation and see where the future of the cleaning industry is heading. At the Contracting Success Conference, there are countless networking opportunities to connect with BSCs. For me, I appreciate these interactions as a way to learn about readers’ current challenges. In return, I try to provide advice from all the information I’ve gathered from my industry sources.
Every year, both associations book impressive keynote speakers. Some unforgettable keynote moments include hearing President George H.W. Bush tell dirty jokes, staring dumbfounded at David Blaine’s magic, and seeing former “The Apprentice” winner Bill Rancic squirm when asked about Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy. The sports stars are also always a big hit, which is why I’m looking forward to Troy Aikman this year.
When asked for reasons to attend, BSCs always quickly point out the connections they make with others in the industry. I can honestly say that this sentiment isn’t cliche. I remember one of my first BSCAI shows, waiting for an education session to start, probably looking like a fish out of water. An older gentleman approached me, asked my name and organization, and what I thought about the cleaning industry. As the session started, he handed me his card: Wayne Simmonds, FBG Service Corporation. I later learned what a legend Wayne was and I deeply appreciated his effort to make a newcomer feel welcomed. The relationships I’ve made since that early show continue to grow every year.
Of course, there’s plenty of fun during the week, too. I don’t know how many sponsor hospitalities and association receptions I’ve closed down, too busy enjoying the camaraderie of colleagues and peers to mind the time.
I hope to see you in Las Vegas starting Sept. 11. Look for Contracting Profits’ staff at ISSA/INTERCLEAN in Booth 3030 and then later in the week at the Contracting Success Conference.
