New Purchasing Tool
This November, ISSA will provide a preview of its newest project: an online resource that helps purchasers compare cleaning chemicals based on their environmental, safety and health attributes, something that has never before been available for buyers to make more educated decisions.
ISSA is developing this new tool with Ecoform, the leading technical-analysis company in the United States that focuses on the environmental performance of companies and their products and processes.
This resource allows buyers to filter product options based on any number of attributes of greatest interest to their organization. The program has developed the following environmental attribute categories of chemical cleaners:
- Material Content: material and chemical composition
- Human Health Impacts: Toxic materials, CMRs, Skin and Eye irritants, etc.
- Environmental Impacts: VOC content, global warming emissions, etc.
- Resource Consumption: Embodied water, embodied energy, non-renewable materials
- Product Design: product recyclability, take-back, design for reuse
- Material Sourcing: renewable materials, material certifications, recycled content
The individual metrics are being developed through the use of a work-group process, the results of which are then reviewed and vetted by the group's Core Development Committee, composed of key stakeholders, including health and environmental advocates, unions, state and federal government representatives, eco-label organizations, large and small cleaning-product manufacturers, contract cleaners, and institutional purchasers.
Be sure to attend the Tuesday morning seminar at ISSA/INTERCLEAN, "The Next Generation of Cleaning Product Labeling Programs," which will offer a sneak preview of the program's Beta version. You also can visit booth #1448 to find out more or sign up to become a Beta tester.
