A reader recently reached out to inquire about an article that listed a very specific quote. The quote, he told me, had become a slogan for his department.
“One well-trained, conscientious housekeeper, given the right tools and enough time, will prevent more disease than a room full of doctors can cure.” (J. Darrel Hicks)
It’s certainly a very powerful statement, and one that I can’t argue with. In fact, it emphasizes the importance of facility cleaning and the dedication of each person working in the industry. But it makes me wonder why, since the work done in this industry is so impactful, the staffs are often ignored or overlooked.
Thankfully, some facilities are changing that by recognizing the dedication of their cleaning crews. Every year, facilities across the country set aside the second full week of September to honor and celebrate the hardworking teams that keep facilities clean.
Since 1981, International Housekeepers Week has encouraged facility cleaning executives to find ways to recognize their teams, boost morale, reinforce standards and values, and just have a lot of fun in the process. Some facilities have kept programs simple with pizza parties and small gifts. Others organize “housekeeping olympics” with similar facilities in their area, complete with events such as bed making, toilet tissue tosses, vacuum races and spirit competitions.
This year, International Housekeepers Week is being held September 11 though 17 and whether you plan a different event for each day of the week, or you choose to celebrate the staff in a single day, the goal is to recognize your teams.
For example, consider providing breakfast or lunch, or host a potluck. Encourage themed spirit days where staff comes dressed each day in a different motif (80’s or crazy hat day are popular). Or promote the team to other departments by recognizing staff in company-wide emails or on posters. Maybe even hold nominations for individual awards such as “Most Dependable” or “Most Innovative Idea.”
The bottom line is, recognition matters. If you aren’t already participating in International Housekeepers Week, consider ways — big or small — that you can recognize these hardworking individuals that make up your cleaning team.
In his quote, Darrel mentioned having the right tools. But that doesn’t necessarily mean physical tools and equipment. It’s amazing what some people can do with a positive attitude, dedication to the job and loyalty to an organization. Positive recognition feeds that and dedicating time to celebrate your staff can make a difference.
