Federal agencies that purchase biobased cleaning products will have to compare their orders with a government-approved list of manufacturers, starting in 2006.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced in January the publication of a final rule for the 2002 Farm Bill, which establishes provisions for the Federal Biobased Products Preferred Procurement Program.

The program, which requires federal agencies to give preference to biobased products, also requires that agencies select only biobased products approved by the USDA.

Federal agencies must have purchasing guidelines for listed biobased products in place by Jan. 11, 2006.

Biobased products are products that are manufactured with plant-derived resources in place of petroleum- or oil-based resources.

The program is designed to promote independence in the U.S. farming industry, increase dependence on domestic goods and reduce dependence on foreign oil.
