In this Facility Cleaning Decisions Roundtable, the Advisory Board discusses industry advancements, IoT, management challenges and staffing
What accomplishments are you most proud of from your career so far?
I am most proud of the potential people see in me. I started as a housekeeper and within one year I moved to a lead. One year later, I was in charge of the surrounding (4) buildings in the Tomball Medical Center. These centers are Sport’s med, Cancer Center, Diagnostic building and a retirement community consisting of an Adult Daycare, Comprehensive Nursing, Assistant Living and a Retirement unit. I have been President of our Houston Chapter IEHA for six years. I was blessed to then work at the #1 Cancer Center of the World (University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center). I’ve received Housekeeper of the Year Award from Houston Chapter IEHA twice, and I had recently received the Manager of Distinction Award. I have been very blessed.

I am very proud of earning the title of director of university housekeeping at North Carolina State University. I’ve also received Employer of the Year from the Mayors office for employing staff with disabilities. And lastly, I am very proud of serving as a District Director and Board Member of IEHA.

I’m proud of the headway I have made with daytime/cooperative cleaning, chairing the ANSI B101.1 standard, and saving the State Farm Policy holders money by implementing cost effective product selections and cleaning processes into our facilities.

I am very proud of the fact that the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) was awarded IPM Star Certification by the IPM Institute of North America. Several schools were also awarded the EPA’s Energy Star Certification. Finally, MPS Facilities and Maintenance and Nutrition Services lead a District wide carton recycling initiative with guidance and grant money from the Carton Council.

I am most proud of my degree in management, which I obtained while working full time. Becoming certified by IEHA was a proud moment. I obtained that certification in 2006. I’m also very proud of my career advancement. I believe this is due to the two previously mentioned achievements, which were both done on my own time and were not required of my position.
