What advice do you have for managers dealing with difficult team members?

Communication and setting clear expectations is best practice.  Each employee has signed on to complete certain job functions and this is the expectation of the company.  Work with your staff but the bottom line is if the need isn't being met maybe this type of job is not what the employee wants.

It’s important, first and foremost, to listen. When necessary, advice the team member on the policies and procedures. And provide a solution with positive input from the team member.

Determine what the difficulty is with the team member. It could that additional training in the use of equipment and supplies is needed. It may be a review of departmental work rules, policies and procedures is needed. Or it may be employee assistance referral is needed.
