Promote Green Cleaning On Earth Day

By this point, we've all celebrated a pandemic birthday or work anniversary. Gone are the days of donuts and cakes in the break room, or recognition at facility meetings or events. Instead, these have been replaced by banners on the lawn and video-call celebrations.

With minimal in-person gatherings, facility cleaning managers must get creative in sharing their own departmental milestones. No doubt, infection prevention measures have been widely covered in company newsletters, organizational websites and display signage. Now is not the time to ease up on this messaging, but infection control shouldn't be the only thing departments are known for.

April 22 marks the 51st anniversary of Earth Day. This is a great opportunity for cleaning departments to showcase what they are doing to preserve our environment for the future.

For example, in the last 12 months, many departments have added new equipment or processes that reduce the use of harsh chemicals. Improved indoor air quality has become a higher priority. And following early supply chain challenges, managers are more selective of consumables, often opting for green certified products.

These are just a few of the moves facilities across the country have made as a way to reduce their environmental footprint and they should be shared with facility occupants and stakeholders. Seek out space in company newsletters and websites. Supplement existing infection prevention signage with displays that stress sustainable efforts. Add a banner to the side of the building or for display in the lawn. Or #GreenCleaning programs on organizational social feeds.

No matter how you do it, Earth Day is a great time to get the word out about green and sustainable cleaning programs. This messaging is another reminder that not only are cleaning departments creating a safe space for building occupants, they are supporting organizational efforts to preserve the environment.

Because of infection control, cleaning is in the spotlight right now. Take advantage of that and make sure people know about the other efforts being made in the department.
