EDUCATION
Who Trains Your Trainer?

We all know that training is an integral part of any successful maintenance program. In fact, training is probably the most important factor in determining an organization’s growth — or lack of growth — because the simple truth is that without properly trained employees, it is impossible to produce the quality results your customers or employer demand. This explains why so much money, time and effort is spent making sure all employees are trained in safety procedures and cleaning applications.

But who should train your trainers?

With so much riding on the results, you need the best training available: You need the Official ISSA Cleaning Industry Train the Trainer program, sponsored by ISSA and Janitor University, the two foremost names in education and training for the cleaning industry worldwide.

Official, yet fun
The Official ISSA Cleaning Industry Train the Trainer program, August 25-26, 2005, in Anaheim, Calif., is your opportunity to learn what it takes to be a star trainer in a creative and fun learning environment. You’ll discover the “laws of learning” and actually put together a successful training program in this highly interactive, all-inclusive course.

“An effective training program is essential for any organization, especially those involved in the cleaning industry,” says industry training legend John Walker, who is presenting the course. “At our Train the Trainer program, we reveal how adults learn and retain information and the best way to deliver it. Many training courses involve a ‘talking head’ approach that can be tedious and boring. There are no talking heads involved with this program — just lots of networking, fun, idea exchanging, and learning the best practice of training in the cleaning industry. We’ve figured out how to put the fun back into training in such a way that the message will stick with you throughout your career.”

Regulatory News

EPA Guide to Green Cleaners
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Office of Environmentally Preferable Purchasing recently finalized its Greening Your Purchase of Cleaning Products. ISSA provided extensive comments, the bulk of which were incorporated into the final document. Although aimed toward federal government purchasers, Greening Your Purchase of Cleaning Products provides a framework to help all buyers and users of green-cleaning products make informed purchasing decisions.

In recognition of its major contributions to the final document, ISSA has received an advanced copy of the publication, which is available in Microsoft Word format by e-mailing ISSA Legislative Affairs Director Bill Balek.

HCS Meets GHS
The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) is considering modifying its Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to make it consistent with the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labeling (GHS).

The news was delivered by David O’Connor, from OSHA’s Office of Chemical Hazards, to participants at the recent ISSA Legislative and Regulatory Forum in Arlington, Va. The GHS, which was adopted by the United Nations in 2003, includes criteria for harmonizing the classification of physical and health hazards, including labeling symbols, hazard-warning statements and signal words as well as material safety data sheets (MSDSs). Currently, the HCS governs the contents of labels and MSDSs for institutional chemical cleaning products not specifically regulated by other U.S. regulatory agencies. The contemplated changes will require most companies to retrain their employees and otherwise modify their hazard communication programs.

OSHA has published a side-by-side comparison of its HCS and the GHS to help interested parties better understand the potential changes.

ISSA will continue to monitor this issue and inform ISSA members of significant developments. For more information, please contact Bill Balek at 800-225-4772 or e-mail.
