Green Seal, the nation’s premier environmental certification organization and the original “Green Seal of Approval,” today announced that Joanne Fox-Przeworski, Ph.D., has been elected Chair of its Board of Directors.

“Joanne is a pioneer in the sustainability and environmental fields and a true visionary. We are most excited to have her serve as our Chair,” said Dr. Arthur Weissman, President and CEO of Green Seal. “Her background as an adviser and educator on sustainable development issues, international negotiations, and corporate social responsibility will be invaluable for the continued growth and expansion of our mission.”

“I am delighted and honored to serve as Green Seal’s Chair,” said Dr. Fox-Przeworski.  “Knowing that I can count on the vast experience and expertise of the Board and staff, I look forward to continue growing the organization and helping Green Seal become better known for its integrity and high quality of work. I also want to express my gratitude to our outgoing chair, Gary Petersen, who has been an enthusiastic, untiring, and devoted advocate for Green Seal for many years.”

Dr. Fox-Przeworski, who has been Secretary of the Green Seal Board, also serves as Chair of the Board of Distinguished Advisors, Environment & Public Health Network, of Chinese Students and Scholars, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Environmental Integrity Project and the Women’s Network for a Sustainable Future. In 1999 she was invited to Bard College in New York to create a Center for Environmental Policy and a professional graduate program, and served as director there until August 2006. From 1995 to 1999 Dr. Fox-Przeworski was Director, North America, for the United Nations Environment Program and a member of the UNEP Senior Management Board in Nairobi, Kenya.

Previously Dr. Fox-Przeworski held various positions at the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development in Paris from 1982 to 1995, including OECD representative to the U.N. Commission on Sustainable Development; head of the Environment Section of the Development Cooperative Directorate; special assistant to two Deputy Secretary-Generals; and principal consultant on urban projects in the Environment Directorate. Dr. Dr. Fox-Przeworski holds a B.A. from Northwestern University; A.M.T. from Harvard University; Ph.D. from Washington University, St. Louis; and honorary doctorate from Ripon College.

Paul Bateman was elected as Secretary of the Green Seal Board to fill the position vacated by Dr. Fox-Przeworski. He is President of the Klein & Saks Group, a Washington, D.C.-based consulting firm. Paul Walitsky, President of The Industrial Ecology Company, LLC, will continue as Treasurer of the Board.
