Leonard Paper Company started in 1940 when Charles Burke Leonard founded the company that bears his name and began selling butcher paper, twine and bags to Baltimore meat markets and grocery stores. A one-man one truck operation, he served as the salesman and the deliveryman from his Aliceanna Street location in downtown Baltimore. When the pulp market diverted all its resources to supporting the war effort during World War II, Leonard quickly diversified and began serving the needs of the burgeoning foodservice industry. The business took off, quickly outgrowing its space on Aliceanna Street. Through the years, the company has occupied several locations in Baltimore, including sites on Calvert and on Mathews Streets. In 1979, Leonard Paper moved to its current location on North Haven Street where growth continues to this day.
Over the years, Leonard Paper has grown into the area’s premier supplier of facilities maintenance supplies and foodservice disposables. Focused on supplying quality products form world class manufacturers, Leonard provides solutions to property management, healthcare, education and hospitality businesses looking to reduce costs and enhance their images.
Today, Leonard Paper is far from a one man operation! A fleet of delivery trucks service clients in four states and the District of Columbia. A state-of-the-art, 180,000 sq. ft. solar powered distribution and office facility with over 140 employees provide exceptional value added services to all markets served. With family members at the helm Leonard is poised for the future. Third generation leadership from President Michael Leonard, Vice Presidents Daniel D. Leonard Jr., Robert Leonard and John Leonard, will propel the company’s growth for many years to come. Retired second generation family members Charles B. Leonard Jr. and Daniel D. Leonard continue serving on the board of directors. The fourth generation has recently entered the business so the future continues looking bright.
As a lifelong corporate citizen of Baltimore, Leonard Paper is committed to giving back to the city it has called home for 75 years. Known for its financial support, product donations as well as generous gifts of time to local deserving organizations, the current leadership is proud to continue this legacy. Over the years, opportunities have arisen to leave Baltimore but this is home and the city they love.
Leonard Paper Company has become one of Baltimore’s stellar business successes over the last 75 years. They remain a continuing example that dedication, hard work and commitment, form the foundation of a thriving enterprise. As Charles B.
