It’s not what show attendees expected to see at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this month, but the self-cleaning toilet took center stage. The toilet was being touted as an “intelligent washlet system that is good for the environment.”

The benefits include smart technology that opens the lid when it detects a person and automatic flush when users are finished. Also, there is no need for toilet paper because the unit scans users and delivers warm aerated water before the automatic dryer turns on.

Then, following the flush, the toilet cleans and sanitizes itself with electrolyzed water. And because it’s coated with titanium dioxide and zirconium, nothing sticks to the bowl. Manufacturers tout the toilets only need to be cleaned once a year.

To date, the current fixtures are only being used in Japan, but interest is growing in other countries. Newer models are also expected to be introduced in Europe and U.S. markets in 2017.
