Richards H. “Dix” Jarden, former president of the Bullen Companies, passed away in February at age 96. He was a self-described salesman with a deep work ethic and a love for the details of things.
Jarden got his start in the cleaning industry by joining his father in the family business, the Franklin Research Company, in Philadelphia, manufacturing specialty cleaning products. In the 1960s, Franklin Research was sold to the Purex Corporation. Jarden resigned as company president to create an independent business. In 1963, he purchased a tiny, struggling manufacturing plant in Folcroft, Pennsylvania, The Bullen Chemical Company, for $10. Today, the company is run by his son Scott, but the senior Jarden remained active in the business up until two weeks before his death.
Jarden served as president of ISSA in 1984 and received the association’s prestigious Jack D. Ramaley Distinguished Service Award in 1990.
