A janitor from Sulphur, Louisiana, is a finalist for the Cintas Corporation's Janitor of the Year Award. Nominee Flora Lara was nominated by W. T. Henning Elementary School.

W.T. Henning is the designated English Language Learners School in the Calcasieu Parish district, and even though it is not listed in her job description, Lara happily serves as an English-Spanish translator when needed.

Her sweet spirit and smile is contagious, as is her hardworking and determined personality, according to the nomination.

“Whether there’s a massive mess in the bathroom, or another garden snake spotted in a classroom, Mrs. Lara is there to take care of it. For over 10 years, Mrs. Lara has gone above and beyond her call of duty to ensure every student and teacher at W.T. Henning Elementary feels welcome, and has a squeaky clean classroom to not only learn in, but thrive in.”

In its fifth year, the Janitor of the Year Contest was created to draw attention to the everyday heroes that go above and beyond their job description to make schools a clean, healthy and fun learning environment.

The 2018 Janitor of the Year winner will be determined by the number of votes and will receive a $5,000 cash prize along with $5,000 in products and services for his or her school from Cintas and Rubbermaid Commercial Products – not to mention bragging rights. A $500 cash prize will be awarded to each of the remaining nine finalists.

Voting for the contest began March 19 and will end on April 20. The janitor with the most votes will win. Those interested in voting can do so here once a day, every day, until the April 20 deadline.
