Thurman Carthen has been a custodian at Galena High School in Reno, Nevada, for 13 years. According to The Good News Network, Carthen is a very talented singer and would sometimes take a break from his daily cleaning duties to sing to a school staff member.
In appreciation of his talent, some of the students asked him to sing at this year's graduation ceremony.
The request was especially moving to Carthen. Cleaning workers often fly under the radar, so to be noticed in this way meant a lot to the man that the school principal describes as “one of the nicest, most sincere people you could ever meet.”
Not only that, it was a fitting tribute to the man that gave so much to his school. As it worked out, 2018 was Carthen's final graduation ceremony before retirement.
Accepting the invitation to sing, it was the first time he ever sang in front of a large crowd. And in doing so, received a standing ovation along with rounds of clapping and cheering.
Washoe County School District officials commented that the performance was "breathtaking." A fitting tribute to a great man.
A Nevada native, Carthen moved back to Reno 14 years ago when his father had heart surgery. Before that he lived in Canada working as an electrician and in construction.
